Truth be told, I just really like wearing things that I designed myself.
I got a few requests from friends who wanted to get some of my designs on their clothes, and heck, here we are now.. selling things on the RedBubble.com market!
RedBubble uses really nice quality shirts from American Apparel, and so far I've been extremely happy with every shirt I've ordered from them. RedBubble is also really good to its community of artists/creators and treats us very well. Before I happened upon RedBubble.com, I tried Cafe Press and Zazzle; my thoughts on those two now:
- CafePress: Not a bad company at all, you can upload your creations just the same as any other place with similar services and sell things on their market. You can get commissions, but it's just not user friendly to set up. You can't do much with your store front and can't really control what you sell very well. I received some shirts that I ordered with some of my designs from CafePress and noted that the shirt material is just crappy.. they use generic material and subpar printing processes.
- Zazzle: Ugh. Well they let you completely customize your storefront and allow for variable commissions and such. Navigating the admin interface is tedious, and editing existing works is a pain in the butt. Zazzle is also quite the nazi about any mere sniff of copyright infringment- they'll take your works down and reject sales/commissions in the blink of an eye because your shirt may contain the word 'Cheese', and Kraft Foods may possibly get angry about you're using the word 'Cheese'. After two such ridiculous take-downs I promptly closed my Zazzle store and moved on to RB.
And now one last plug for RedBubble, taken from their own site:
RedBubble allows you to sell your work with zero hassle, supply us with a digital file and we'll take care of all manufacture, shipping and customer service. From cards to t-shirts via stickers and framed prints, not forgetting calendars, canvases and posters, we really do have more high quality products than you can shake a large and unruly stick at.
TL;DR: I like t-shirts and decided to start selling some, just for fun.
